An expert monitoring of the LIFE Vía de la Plata project took place this week in Salamanca.  The European Commission visited Salamanca to check the progress of the project. The visit was held on January 19th and 20th and made it possible to check the progree of the project with the different partners (Municipal Housing and Urban Planning Board, Salamanca City Council, BISITE and Geosciences Groups of the USAL and the Unesco Chair of the UPV/EHU), as well as the status of the different activities planned as part of this initiative. The project aims to transform the route of the Vía de la Plata which runs along the municipality, turning it into a large green corridor of 6.9 kilometers.

This is the first visit of the EC in person. Last year's April meeting took place online bacause of the pandemic.

During the first session, a technical meeting was held between the monitoring expert and the project partners, preceded by an institutional reception at the Salamanca City Hall. During this meeting, the progress of the LIFE Vía de la Plata actions was presented, followed by a review of the project's financial documentation.

During the second part of the session, the EC visited areas on which the project is working in situ, and where they were also able to learn, in first person, what citizens thought of the project.

Citizen participation

During the visit to zone 2 (urban expansion area), a participatory workshop was held at the Casa de las Asociaciones, where the representatives of several local associations shared with the EC manager the main conclusions drawn from the series of participatory workshops held last autumn at a number of municipal centers.

They also evidenced the progress that is being made in relation to the dissemination and socialization of the project and also in relation to the technical assistance on fauna and biodiversity, such as sampling and the installation of nests and shelters for different species.
