Smart cities are a type of urban development applying technology that we at BISITE have been working on for several years. The foundation of smart cities is smart buildings, which we focus on through the BUILDMA project (BUILDings intelligent MAnagement system based on edge computing), a project we share with Nvision and Sensing & Control, companies specializing in the Internet of Things (IoT).

Smart buildings integrate different technologies to improve aspects such as energy efficiency, comfort, environmental conditions, and adaptation to the preferences of their inhabitants. To get the most out of them, it is necessary to include a Building Management System, a complex task that is facilitated by technologies such as the Internet of Things and advances in machine learning.
The adoption of these systems generates economic benefits and reduces the environmental impact of the construction sector, but only some management systems include the necessary real-time learning that allows for the desired adaptation.
In BUILDMA, an intelligent management system is being designed through two pilot tests in a real-world environment. Estimates based on available data are provided to users to maximize comfort; furthermore, the system is capable of adapting in real time according to occupant preferences and taking efficiency measures into account.
Thus, the BUILDMA project, funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities with NextGenerationEU funds through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, represents a significant step towards the construction of smarter, more sustainable buildings that cater to the preferences of their inhabitants.
