In the last years, during the peak of smartphone market, a lot of economic sectors have significantly changed, especially tourism. Users habitually use mobile applications to replace old maps, such as localizers, to buy transport tickets or to make hotel or restaurant bookings.
Many studies, recently developed, assure tourism is one of the most important industries of the world regarding annual revenue. Thus, any innovative change introduced in this sector may involve an important step forward and so, an important business due to the fact that new tourists are provided with new interactive tools for mobile devices (smartphones, tablets...).
The main objective of this project has been to develop an application offering a guided tour to Salamanca’s New Cathedral, by using Augmented Reality technology and, particularly, the possibilities offered by Image Recognition and Identification.
This technique makes it possible to know the exact point, inside the cathedral, where the user is just by recognizing an image or poster. This way, we can display multimedia content adapted to the focal point where the user is localized (video, audio-guide service, texts, images, 3D models, etc.).
It is also possible to guide the user through the different places of interest because, by knowing the exact point where the user is, thanks to Image Recognition, we can create routes to get to the point the user selects (other points of interest, exits, etc.).
